Edison Waromi is the Chair of the ULMWP Council Committee, a lawyer and the Executive President of the West Papua National Authority (Otoritas Nasional Papua Barat). It is an organisation which campaigns for Papuan independence. Mr Waromi was first arrested in October 2003, in connection with his leadership role in the commemoration of the West Melanesia State’s fourteenth anniversary.
Edison Waomi was elected the Prime Minister of West Papua at the 2011 Third Papuan Congress. Immediately following the congress, Indonesian soldiers stormed the congregation and arrested Mr. Waromi. In March 2012 Mr Waromi, along with four others, known as the “Jayapura5”, were charged with treason and sentenced to three-year jail terms.
