Interim President: Rest in Peace Archbishop Desmond Tutu

December 26, 2021 in Message, Statement

Rest in Peace the great Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Today we mourn the loss of a great spiritual and humanitarian leader, an advocate for peace, hope and justice and a beacon of light for those in need of comfort all around the world.

He was also a true friend to the West Papuan people and our struggle for freedom, repeatedly calling on the UN to take action and provide us with our right to self-determination.

I was truly honored and humbled to meet with him twice, most recently in 2015, when he shared his encouragement to continue the struggle and his words of hope that freedom will come.

Today, the ULMWP Provisional Government and the people of West Papua send our deepest condolences to Archbishop Tutu’s family and to the people of South Africa.

Benny Wenda
Interim President
ULMWP Provisional Government
