The Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), made up of 79 countries – nearly half the world – has reiterated its support for a UN visit to West Papua.

In a letter from the President of the OACPS Council of Ministers, the Solomon Islands Foreign Minister, to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the OACPS reiterated its call for an ‘urgent UN mission’ to West Papua.

The Secretary-General of the OACPS also issued a public statement reaffirming the 79-member organisation’s call for the UN visit, based on ‘the unwavering commitment of the OACPS to human rights, the rule of law and democratic principles’.

The OACPS passed a resolution on West Papua in December 2019 calling for a UN visit to West Papua in line with the 2019 call of the leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum. In total, 84 countries have now echoed the call worldwide, roughly half the planet.
